Book Hangover Cure: How I Get Over a Book That Wrecked Me

You know the feeling. You finish a book, you close it, and then you just⦠sit there. Staring at the wall. Not ready to pick up anything else, not ready to talk about it yet, and definitely not ready to hear someone ask, "So, what are you reading next?"
That's a book hangover, and I get them badly. Right now my brain is still living in my Throne of Glass reread, and I can already feel the next one coming. I used to fight it, forcing myself straight into the next book, then blaming that book for not being the old one. It never worked.
So this is my actual book hangover cure: the little ritual that helps me land back in real life without rushing past a book that mattered to me.
How to Get Over a Book Hangover (My Actual Ritual)
Here's what I do, in order, when a book wrecks me:
1. Let myself sit with it
No new book for at least a night. I make tea and let the ending replay in my head. The book deserves a beat before I replace it.
2. Talk about it with one safe person (or scroll Bookstagram and BookTok)
Not a spoiler-filled group chat, but one person who gets it, or my notes app. Saying out loud which scene broke me helps me figure out what I'm holding onto: a character, a relationship, or a question the next book hasn't answered yet. Or, scroll Bookstagram or BookTok: sometimes a batch of good edits or a few "if you liked this book, you'll like this book" reels will do it.
3. Revisit the scenes that wrecked me
This is why I tab scenes as I read. On hangover night, I flip back to the tabs for a few minutes. It turns the ache into something warmer, more like missing a place you loved visiting than losing it.
4. Do something small and physical
A walk, tidying my reading corner, reorganising my Kindle shelves. Moving my body signals that we're back in the real world better than scrolling does.
5. Pick the next book by feeling, not by obligation
I used to pick whatever was "next" on my list, even if my heart wasn't in it. Now I ask: do I want comfort, or do I want to be wrecked again? The answer picks the book.
What to Read After a Book Hangover
If I want comfort, I reach for a reread: a world I already know, where I can relax instead of learning a whole new cast. If I want to be wrecked again, I go for something completely different, so I'm not constantly comparing it to the book I just finished. That distance helps.
My own "next up" stack is waiting for exactly this moment: the Gilded series by Marissa Meyer, Quicksilver by Callie Hart, and the Everflame series by Penn Cole. I haven't read any of them yet, so these are hopes, not reviews, but knowing they're there takes the pressure off. I just have to choose the one that sounds like the mood I'm in.
And if nothing on the stack calls to me? That's fine too. A comfort reread, or even a few days of not reading at all, won't ruin my reading life. The next book that matters will find me when I'm actually ready for it.
The Sticker-Brain Part (You Knew This Was Coming)
Here's my favourite part of the ritual, and the one only a sticker person would invent: when a book gives me a proper hangover, it earns a sticker.
My Kindle carries the stickers of the series I'm in, like a little timeline of where my reading life has been. A book that wrecked me doesn't just disappear when I finish it. It gets a marker, so months later I can look at my Kindle and remember exactly how that book felt.
