How I Keep a Reading Journal (Without It Feeling Like Homework)
I have started a reading journal more times than I can count, and I have abandoned just as many. The pretty ones with the colour-coded keys and the thirty-page spreads? Abandoned by February. The one I actually still use is a bit messy and a bit behind in places, and it is the first one that has ever stuck, because I finally stopped treating it like homework.
So if you have ever wondered how to start a reading journal, or you have one sitting half-empty on a shelf, here is what works for me. 💕
What Do You Write in a Reading Journal? ✍️
This is the question that used to stop me before I even started. I thought a reading journal had to be a review, and I do not always have a review in me the minute I finish a book.
Here is what I actually write down, and nothing more is required:
1. 📖 The book, the author, and when I finished it
That alone is a complete log entry.
2. 💭 One line about how it felt
Not a star-rating essay, just "wrecked me" or "could not put it down." Future me reads that line and remembers the whole book.
3. 🔖 A quote or two I want to keep
The lines I tabbed while reading, copied out by hand.
4. 🎁 Who I would hand it to
"For my friend who loves slow-burn fantasy" is more useful than any rating.
That is it. If a page only has those four things, it still counts. ✅

How to Start a Reading Journal (The Low-Pressure Version) 🌿
If you are starting from scratch, keep the setup boring on purpose: a notebook you already like writing in, a pen that does not scratch, and one page per book.
I do not set up a whole year of spreads in January anymore. I make the next page when I start the next book.
Two things live next to my journal while I read: a pack of tabs and my phone's notes app. I tab scenes as I go: the scene that broke me, the line I want to reread. When I finish the book, I flip back through the tabs and pick the one or two worth copying into the journal. The tabs do the remembering; the journal just keeps the best of it.

My Reading Journal Spreads (The Ones I Actually Reuse) 📓
I only have a few spreads I come back to, and they all earn their page:
📚 The book log
One line per book, in the order I finished them. No grades, no pressure. Looking back over a year of one-liners is my favourite kind of reading recap.
💬 The quote pages
Not every quote, just the ones I tabbed and could not stop thinking about. Some pages are from a single book; some collect a theme across books, like lines about home or about choosing your own people.
🌙 The TBR page
This one is a wish list, not a to-do list. Right now it holds the books I keep saying I will get to next: the Gilded series by Marissa Meyer, Quicksilver by Callie Hart, and the Everflame series by Penn Cole. I have not read any of them yet, so they sit here as hopes, not reviews, and there is no guilt when I pick up something else first.
☕ The "currently reading" note
One half-page for the book I am in right now. For me at the moment, that is my Throne of Glass reread, which is still living rent-free in my brain. The note holds the character threads I want to keep straight in a series this long.

How Do You Keep a Reading Journal Going? 🌱
Honestly? By letting it be behind sometimes. A journal with a gap in it is not a failed journal. It is a journal belonging to a person who got busy, or who read three books in a weekend and did not feel like writing about any of them yet.
The rule that saved mine is this: I am allowed to catch up in bulk, and I am allowed to skip a book entirely. If I finished something and have nothing to say about it, it gets one line in the log and we move on.
I also stopped comparing mine to the beautiful journals online. Mine is a notebook with tabs sticking out of it and handwriting that gets worse when I am excited. It works because it fits the way I actually read.

The Sticker-Brain Part (You Knew This Was Coming) ✨
Here is where the journal and the rest of my reading life meet: my Kindle carries the stickers of the series I am in, like a little timeline of where my reading has been, and my journal is the written version of the same thing.
