Starting Queen of Shadows? Here's What I'm Carrying Over From Heir of Fire

By Mandy•October 2026•4 min read
Starting Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas

I just finished Heir of Fire, and I did what I always do after a book wrecks me: I immediately picked up the next one. I'm 75% of the way through Queen of Shadows now, Throne of Glass book 4, and I wanted to write down what I carried into it, for anyone about to start it.

🚨Spoiler Warning & Reading Context

Fair warning up front: this post has Heir of Fire spoilers and exactly one tiny Queen of Shadows breadcrumb. If you haven't finished book 3 yet, bookmark this one for later. If you're exactly where I was, Heir of Fire done, Queen of Shadows open on your lap, this is for you.

First, What Queen of Shadows Actually Is in the Series

Queen of Shadows is book 4 of the Throne of Glass series, and it's the one where the storylines that Heir of Fire kept apart finally start pulling back together. I won't say how (that's the fun of reading it), but if Heir of Fire felt like three separate stories running side by side, book 4 is where you start to feel them converging.

That's honestly why I didn't take a break between books. Heir of Fire ends on threads, not resolutions, and I needed to know where they landed.

What I'm Carrying From Heir of Fire: Aelin and Rowan

The biggest thing I'm carrying into Queen of Shadows is Aelin and Rowan's relationship: not the romance part (though, yes, that too), but the training, the trust, and the sheer stubbornness of both of them.

Heir of Fire is where Aelin stops running from what she is and starts owning it, and Rowan is the person who refuses to let her do it alone.

What Chapter Does Rowan Come Back in Queen of Shadows?

Rowan Whitethorn officially returns at the very end of Chapter 27 of Queen of Shadows.

If you are missing Rowan like I was (I will be honest, I googled this for reading motivation, zero shame), he reappears right as Chapter 27 closes out. That is roughly 35% of the way through the book. That is all I will say, but having that exact finish line in mind got me through the entire stretch where he was gone. And trust me: it is well worth the wait.

What I'm Carrying: Manon Blackbeak

Manon was my surprise favorite of Heir of Fire, and I'm not even sorry about it. She starts the book as someone you'd absolutely cross the street to avoid, and by the end of it, you're invested in her in a way you did not see coming.

I went into Queen of Shadows most curious about her. Her storyline felt like it was just getting started, and so far, book 4 is delivering on that front in the best way. No spoilers, just vibes: if Manon didn't hook you in book 3, give her another chapter or two.

As someone obsessed with morally-grey characters like Manon and Rowan, I had to turn that energy into something wearable. Our Morally Grey embroidered sweatshirt and Fae Fantasy stickers are 25% off right now for our website launch!

What I'm Carrying: Dorian, Chaol, and Adarlan

Heir of Fire leaves the Adarlan side of the story in a rough place: Dorian dealing with something genuinely terrifying, Chaol carrying guilt that isn't entirely his to carry, and a kingdom that feels like it's holding its breath.

I'm not going to recap every detail here (my brain is still processing it, honestly), but if it's been a while since you read book 3, the two things worth refreshing before book 4 are: what Dorian is wrestling with, and where Chaol and Dorian left things with each other.

My Honest Advice Before You Start Book 4

A few things I'm glad I did, and one thing I wish I'd done:

1. Don't skip the last few chapters of Heir of Fire

I know, you just read them. But the final scenes set up book 4 more directly than I expected, and having them fresh made the opening of Queen of Shadows click immediately.

2. Keep your tabs or annotations handy

If you annotate (I do: badly, lovingly, with far too many tabs), book 4 rewards you for remembering who said what and who owes whom.

3. Don't Google anything: except this one thing

Seriously, Throne of Glass spoilers are everywhere, and Queen of Shadows has moments you'll want to hit completely fresh. My one exception: I googled when Rowan comes back because I needed the motivation. Chapter 27, if you're in the same boat. Everything else, stay strong.

The Sticker-Brain Part (You Knew This Was Coming)

I can't start a new book in a series without thinking about which moments deserve to live on my Kindle. Heir of Fire gave me a whole list (the quotes post I wrote is proof), and I'm already mentally bookmarking Queen of Shadows scenes as future sticker candidates.

That's the thing about a series this long: by book 4, your Kindle, your water bottle, your journal: they're all a little timeline of where you've been in the story.

So if you're starting Queen of Shadows too, here's my little ritual: pick one sticker that represents where you just came from (Heir of Fire, in all its fire-and-feathers glory), and let it ride along while you read book 4. By the time you finish, you'll know exactly which moment from this book earns the next spot.

Our Throne of Glass-inspired designs live in the shop if you want to build your own little timeline: no pressure, just bookish things made by someone currently five books deep and emotionally compromised. 😉
